Eating Disorders
Believe it or not, eating disorders are the deadliest mental illnesses. While there are many different eating disorders, the most common are anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder. Many people with eating disorders fall outside of these three diagnoses, so it can be challenging to identify whether or not you're suffering from one if you don't align with one of those three. A general rule is that those who suffer from an eating disorder focus too much on their weight, body shape, and food, leading to dangerous eating behaviors. Therapy can teach you how to replace unhealthy habits with healthy ones and improve your overall relationship with food. Recovery works best when you have a team of people that support you, so family-based therapy gets your family members involved to make sure you are sticking to your new healthy eating patterns.

Suicide/Self-Harm
Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in the United States, and it's entirely preventable. There are many stages to suicidality, beginning with ideation and progressing to suicidal behavior. Suicide is never the source of a problem; it's the sign of an underlying issue that needs to be addressed. Therapy can help you explore the issues causing your suicidal thoughts and create a plan that treats the underlying complication. Although purposefully hurting yourself may seem like an isolating experience, it's way more common than you'd think, especially in adolescents and young adults. Self-harm is a sign of emotional distress and indicates a need for better coping skills. There are various mental illnesses associated with self-harm, including borderline personality disorder, depression, eating disorders, anxiety, or PTSD. However, self-harm doesn't require a diagnosable mental illness. Any form of emotional pain can lead an individual to harm themselves.
